I figured that since today is Thanksgiving, what better topic to write about than a journal dedicated to things that you are thankful for? If you’ve never heard of a gratitude journal before, let me tell you what it’s all about.
What is a gratitude journal?
A gratitude journal is pretty self explanatory in that it is a journal that you write down brief sentences of something that you are grateful for in. You can use any journal or notebook that you have laying around to get started. This can look different for everybody; it’s more the idea or concept of it that I’m getting at.
How do I get started?
Honestly, just go for it. I think it’s easiest to write in your journal at night, right before you go to bed. Why? It’s a good way to recap your day in a very positive way. The cool thing about a gratitude journal is that you have to write down things that you are grateful for, which forces you to think positive. Even if you think you can’t think of anything, there is always something. You might be grateful for the roof over your head; or the food in your fridge; or maybe that you are fortunate enough to even have a fridge.
Who can write in a gratitude journal?
LITERALLY ANYONE! You can get your whole family in on it! Unfortunately I’ve gotten out of this habit, but we used to have a notebook on our countertop that everyone would write in throughout the day. You can ask your little kiddos what they are thankful for and just wait for the cutest answers. This is a great way to teach your children values in a generational way.
What are the benefits to writing in a gratitude journal?
There are both physical and mental health benefits to participating in a gratitude journal. Your mindset is so so so powerful to your mental health and personal growth. Since this concept challenges you to only think positive about the day and physically write down those positive thoughts, there is a mindset shift that happens in your brain. This is especially great for climbing out of the depression and anxiety we can often find ourselves in. Certainly in today’s world that is filled with instant gratification and comparisons on social media, for example.
We may even find ourselves physically smiling while reflecting on the day behind us while we think about what made a positive impact on us. We might also become more aware of and be thankful for our health and find ourselves living a more active lifestyle.
Writing in a gratitude journal is a practical and constructive habit to start today and continue everyday. A habit that is time-effective (who doesn’t have 5 minutes before bed?) and healthful. Get journaling!
I’d love to hear below what has worked for you or what you’ve experienced from doing a gratitude journal!
